Brief summaries of the elective workshops held at this year's SDC conference on Friday Nov 25th as written by the presenters:

Workshop A

Practical Communication Skills: Thriving in the Workplace
A crash course on workplace communication skills on how to make your ALT/JTE relationships thrive. Develop creative and practical solutions to everyday communication challenges.

The Re-Contracting Decision
The decision to leave JET or re-contract for another year is not a small matter. It takes careful consideration of where you are in your life at the moment and where you think you will be in a year. Weigh the good and the bad in this important workshop.

Elementary School Activities
Styled like an Elementary class, this workshop will introduce a variety of  elementary school games as well as a group discussion/Q & A session.

Making Materials “102”
Building on last year’s making materials seminar, new materials and key questions will be introduced like, how can a worksheet be adapted into a activity, adapting unsuccessful lessons, and a guide on how to use MS Word in Japanese.

Workshop B

How to Incorporate your JTE,HRT, or Yourself Into Your Lesson
This workshop will introduce how we can improve, overcome, and get the most of our current situation in the classroom by incorporating our JTE/HRT into our lesson or how to get ourselves  involved.

Easily Adaptive Activities
Teaching a wide range of ages can be challenging in terms of attention span, ability, and interest. We explore a multitude of well known games that can be modified to fit any need.

Teaching Special Needs
This workshop aims to provide participants a better understanding of the special needs of their students and strategies for more effective teaching. We will also address teaching strategies for different classroom environments – mixed and separate.

E.S. Activities for Visit Teachers
Focused on ALTs who visit elementary schools only a few times a month/year, we will present and discuss methods, activities, and appropriate topics for E.S. visit lessons.

Will there be a video camera in each room? :D I’d love to see some of these post-MYS. Sucks having to choose only one.

Hmmm. At the moment there won’t be, but MAYBE we could get something arranged as it’s a good idea. I am not sure how likely it is, but I will ask around.

You figure there’s 4 seminars at a time, so 4 cameras and 4 tripods… then they can be uploaded to Damon’s YouTube! Great resource database! :D
